World Olympic Day

World Olympic Day, a global celebration, is officially recognized by the Olympic movement since 1948. This decision was made during the 42nd session of the IOC, held in Saint-Moritz (Switzerland) in January of that year, marking a significant moment in the history of the Olympics.

The date of June 23 was chosen in reference to Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided on June 23, 1894 to revive the Olympic Games in the presence of 12 countries delegates gathered at the Sorbonne in Paris.

The Creation of the Name

On June 23, 1948, World Olympic Day was launched with the participation of 9 Olympic committees: those of Great Britain, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, Switzerland, Greece, Uruguay, and Venezuela. This diverse participation from different corners of the world is a commitment to the inclusive spirit of the Olympics.

Olympic Day is much more than a sporting event in the world. It is a day organized and sybolized to promote the Olympic values. They are based on the three pillars of moving, learning and discovering.

Move, Learn, Discover

A distant echo of the Latin saying of the Olympic movement (“Citius—Altius—Fortius,” which can be translated as “Faster—Higher—Stronger”), the three pillars of World Olympic Day set the tone for a rich day of events, which is celebrated today in many countries.
