Only 2% of the roughly 100,000 private non-operating foundations in the United States hold more than $50 million in assets. As a matter of fact, foundations with assets between $1 million and $5 million represent most US-based foundations. However, various smaller foundations are also entering the field.
Grant giving peaked in 2020 and 2021, in which foundations gave an average of 2.4% more than the minimum distribution requirement, as stated by Foundation Source. Moreover, the same source identified that in 2021, foundation assets made a record of $1.2 trillion.
