Statement of Purpose in the field of Civil Engineering

by Shamsul April 6, 2022

Statement of Purpose for the graduate program at the University of Washington

in the field of Civil Engineering

“Education is that tool that will put on the fastest track for the acquisition of knowledge as well as personality which will set one apart from the crowd.” This aspect is a bottomless hole where the more one pours himself into it, he will feel more thirst.’

Infrastructural growth and industrial practices are segments that harmonize the development of any economy globally. The modern-day society aims to attain sustainability and steadiness by setting up suitable infrastructure. My inclination towards this subject area was foreseeable owing to my interest in chemistry and physics in my last two years of schooling. Moreover, I was deeply attracted by the complication of contemporary buildings that required the appliance of IT tools at each phase of project designing, construction and administration. Therefore, my futuristic plans include contributing greatly to such creative and challenging areas of life. As I get admission in the most rigorous and competitive civil engineering programs, I have plans as to what I will be doing there. However, civil engineering is even more challenging yet interesting than I have imagined.

From the second year, I had a deep interest in gaining knowledge and subject in depth in place of securing marks only though I managed to put up good marks on the board. My uncle, being a civil engineer further fuelled my inspiration that defined my career goals.

Undergraduate Program in Civil Engineering

Post my years of the undergraduate program in Civil Engineering, I feel wholly content with my choice of opting engineering as my career preference since it exhibits the most practical and unassuming approach to dealing with human issues. My keenness, zest, the scope for improvement, and accessible opportunities in the area of Civil Engineering have stimulated my interest even further. However, undergraduate study is not the end of the journey toward competence and excellence.  I wish to contribute to potential world developments through consequential research and civil drawings, and honestly feel that undertaking a graduate degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from your revered University at this stage would be a superlative step on this path to success. Moreover, this will open newer avenues for exploration and will give a broad range of career options.

During the course of my under-graduation, I got my hands on comprehensive knowledge and all through my industrial training tenure, I was an integral part of an industrial building venture for a renowned name. My graduate program was edifying and demanding as tested my skills and proficiency at each level. Herein, I undertook the job of conducting a study of material testing and presented the designing of toughened inventive structures. I was also allowed to visit and become conversant with the art of surveying and was put through the diverse phases of Construction Management and Engineering. During this golden opportunity, I networked with the project engineers who actively partook in the revolutionary activities and this meticulously motivated me and strengthened my decision of pursuing Master’s in Civil Engineering.

My Strategy for the Graduate Program

At this juncture, I am quite confident, that when a make a transition to the graduate program, I will build my career on the stronger foundations that I have gained in the past few years. My strategy for the graduate program will be somewhat prolonged where I will consolidate my existing knowledge in a specialized manner and acquire as well as polish those skills that are essential for research. In civil engineering, my field of interest is Environmental engineering. This subject has started to gain a lot of prominence in the recent few years.

My priorities always included concept validation through realistic first-hand applications, and I proudly confirm that the internship, projects, and lab work I was exposed to only assisted me in comprehending the execution of various theories. The first project I was a part of entailed a building plan that demanded composite shafts and pillars, and the other project employed iron and carbon steel as strengthening forces. The construction durability was examined via MATLAB software, and it was then that I learned the systematic implementation of research and derivations.

Extra Curriculum

In addition to my past academic excellence and undergraduate distinction, I was also an active member of various volunteer groups like volunteering as a tutor at AL-Fursan Private High School, wherein I assisted students with an improved comprehension of physics, chemistry, and math and helped them improving their grades whilst receiving exceptional feedback from both parents and teachers. I was also an active member of Sydney’s Saudi Club and VP Academic in the Saudi association at the University of Technology. I have frequently been part of varied extracurricular activities. Moreover, I got the Full Scholarship from 2015- till now from the Ministry of Education – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

I am applying to your college on the account of the excellent research facilities combined with a dedicated and distinguished faculty member. Seeking admission to your esteemed institution holds paramount importance in my career goals. With the combination of my theoretical knowledge and practical skills, you will find me well equipped to meet the requirements and expectations of the prestigious institution. I have full confidence that I have complete synchronization with your academic standards and will hope that you will consider giving me admission in your graduate study program.

Having made this statement of my set objectives, I completely believe that what the institution is looking for in its prospective student is having a strong background and the will to perform as well as deliver. Studying under extremely distinguished faculty members, a perfect environment inclusive of academic activities, along with state-of-the-art research facilities in the field of Civil Engineering are some very important factors that serve as my motivation to select your university.

Statement of Purpose for the graduate program at the University of Washington- Question’s Answer

Answer # 01

The biggest challenge that I have faced being a student is to complete tasks by breaking them down in steps along with checking over my daily progress. Work may pile up and deadlines were missed which led to frustration and inadequacy. Connecting with advisors or mentors helped in the creating and following of a manageable schedule along with the setting of daily tasks. The process took place through Check Boxes on paper which also developed a sense of achievement and made me feel good about my work.

Answer # 02

Graduate programs involve several tasks as the students are expected to study, conduct research, prepare assignments as well as balance classwork. I often struggle with the constant effort to study while maintaining my social life. In order to get the tasks completed efficiently and effectively as well as remain socially active, time management is very important. To cater this challenge, the idea of programming is considered to be effective as it will manage work/life balance and the stress that comes with it. Time management strategy includes creating a daily planner which will list the tasks that need to be accomplished as well as notes of upcoming tasks so that I get prepared for them. As the list gets completed, I will tick the task marking it as complete.

Answer # 03

As a part of my academic training, I have been a part of many projects that tested my potential and applied skills. I had a desire to work on projects that use alternative fuel sources for environmental conservation. I undertook the job of conducting a study of material testing and presented the design of toughened inventive structures. The letter of completion from the managing director back when I have finished my internship included

10 Characteristics of a Good Teacher

As the new academic year approaches, the teachers become more active. It is time to say “Welcome” to new students. Not only do they welcome the new students, but also find students who received their upgrades. This is a happy moment. Teachers like to impress the students in order to get more attention. They want to give them something special that will last for longer and work for life. This is why teachers should upgrade themselves too. This is time for them to find new improvements and correct the mistakes they made in the past. We talked about the best features of a good teacher. Many philosophers presented about them valuable points. Here are the top ten characteristics of a good teacher.

George Grant:

A good teacher always starts a new year with a fresh mind. He starts a new term, semester or even every day as a new day. Teaching sounds like a simple task. It may be simple for people who just read the books in front of students and say goodbye. However, it isn’t very easy for people who not only take the responsibility of academic but professional life of their students. Teaching is not a kid’s game. It demands more time.

It requires a teacher to prepare the lessons and find exciting ways to deliver. The mode of delivery is one of the most important features. Teachers who always come up with new delivery methods can easily win hearts. On the other hand, teachers who don’t start fresh usually fail to deliver a lecture according to the true meanings. So the very first thing all the teachers should use is the freshness of mind.

David Hicks:

Are you ready for questions? A teacher should always be prepared to have questions. He can’t impose his thoughts or opinions on students. This case is even worse at colleges and universities. Professors have to face challenges, especially when they develop new ideas. There are colleagues and staff. They have to deal with the students who learned about the old theories. A good teacher is always open to questions. He welcomes the questions in class or anywhere else. Students should not feel shy, or they should never hesitate while asking questions. Good teachers always promote the culture of asking questions. They love to hear from the students. It is an open-minded class culture.

In contrast, a bad teacher never welcomes the questions. He prepares old notes and delivers the same points to every class. This is why bad teachers don’t like questions. They have limited knowledge about the field of study. Those who love to find questions should also provide logical and satisfying answers to students.

Greg Wilbur:

Education has spiritual links. It has dimensions that go beyond knowledge. There is no limit to knowledge and learning. Students who are ready to learn more should get their chances. Teachers should be open to new things and findings. They should never cover themselves with old school theories. It has been observed that some teachers limit themselves with old knowledge. They don’t want to advance their knowledge. This is a bad example for the students. Remember, students follow their teachers. They make icons or ideals at the colleges. They adopt styles or certain professors and want to do their things in a special way. What if the students learn to use the old knowledge from their teachers? What if they learn not to learn new things? Teachers should be highly careful in this matter. They should set examples with their character, knowledge and behavior.

Spiritual connectivity is another thing. Teachers should try to have a spiritual connection with students. This is very common in the primary and secondary education systems. Students remember their school teacher forever. They may ignore the college or university teachers, but it is hard for them to forget the school teachers. This is due to the fact that they learn about the true nature of virtue from these persons.

Tracey Lee Simmons:

For a long time, most teachers used to burn the old notes and lectures. Nowadays, this routine is changing. Today, no teacher burns the old notes, lectures and presentations. They like to keep them in the archive. These are the basics. These old notes might be useful for the students who want to revise the basics once again. It happens in many cases. For example, some students feel that they are weak in certain aspects. They may need assistance to cover the knowledge gap. These old notes may be helpful for the students. Good teachers always keep a copy of basic notes. The practice is very common at the university level. Professors store the presentations, research papers, books and other materials in the library or repository.

No doubt, the old notes may not be more useful because of the recent advances, but these are always good to clear the concepts. This is why professors always like to keep the old notes, but they never stop improving the lectures. They improve the lectures every day. They use a superior’s class experience, student interaction, and guidelines to bring positive changes in the notes. This creates a quality set of information that is ready to upgrade the knowledge-base of students.

Tim McIntosh:

A link between student and teacher is similar to the tide of the ocean. It causes all the students to improve. Tim has several teachers but he likes the initial mentors. “No doubt, we usually ignore the initial supervisors after getting the modern professors, but initial mentors indeed have a primary role in background strengthening. They develop a strong background in academics. They are responsible for your academic and personal grooming. Great teachers always establish links with students. They never quit their connection with the students even after the passing out ceremony.

Cindy Rollins:

Education is a process of understanding and seeing. Teachers are the medium who bring us to this level. Education gives us a clear idea about the specific fields and professions. It makes us able to understand complex things. It allows us to develop complicated things. Education provides us a chance to find the answers to technical questions. This is why teachers are always important. A good teacher always takes care of these things. He never underestimates the potential of any student. He sees everyone as a master class. A good teacher not only teaches the syllabus but also provides insights. He tells the students to broaden their knowledge about old and new things in order to ensure progress in life.

Andrew Kern:

A good teacher has a set of useful habits. He learns about the context before teaching any lesson. Andrew tries to find full command of the topic before presenting it to students. He learns the skills before preparing students. For example, a swimming teacher can not prepare a team of good swimmers if he doesn’t know how to swim. This is why modern teachers, especially science teachers, master all the basic skills and techniques before joining their students.

Peter Vande Brake:

For sure, there are numerous habits a good teacher may have. However, curiosity is the key. A good teacher should be curious. In normal cases, we learn that students should be curious. This is good but a teacher should also be curious in order to balance the matter. A group of curious students may not learn the right things if they don’t have a curious teacher. They may end up learning something else while trying to have skills relevant to a technical field. Therefore, it is necessary for the teachers to master all the skills and techniques. Curious teachers are an asset.

They are always progressive and ready to learn. They accept the changes immediately and don’t require solid references to modify their previous practices. According to Brian Phillips, classical knowledge is the basic requirement. Learning classical knowledge may not benefit the students. However, teachers can turn classical knowledge into applied knowledge with the help of their curious nature. They can introduce more interesting points to investigate. This is how modern day science progresses. So then, curiosity stands as a superior habit of good teachers.

 Brian Phillips:

Given the possible readership for a creative list, it may sound strange to say it. However, ongoing learning is the best habit of a successful teacher. No teacher can stand in the field without upgrading his knowledge. The knowledge and learning requirements are changing with everyday passing. Nowadays, students want to have modern knowledge. They want to be successful in the professional field. It is only possible when they learn something modern and different from their seniors. A teacher should be open to new subjects, topics and techniques. He must get command of the new things in order to fulfill the modern requirements of students. A teacher who learns new things and has modern knowledge is a blessing for students.

Schools are old places where students see the basic syllabus. However, basic coursework is not enough to support them in modern day life. This is why students go to colleges and universities. They have the curiosity to gather new knowledge. This curiosity should also be present in the teachers. A college or university that encourages the teachers to learn new things gets more recognition in society. This is how famous universities such as Harvard, Oxford and others create a prestigious status in the world education system.

Joshua Gibbs:

It may sound funny but a good teacher always eats and drinks well. This is a quality habit of a good teacher. In modern societies, teachers are very busy. They don’t have time for families and social activities. However, there is something that they can’t ignore. This is a diet. Good eating and drinking habit makes a perfect teacher. The teachers need to remain in good health in order to deal with daily life activities. They must keep the sickness and illness away.

The teachers must set a good example in front of students. They should teach their students to balance academic life with health. They should be role models in this matter. A good teacher has to attend several functions at academic places or in society. Their students keep inviting them for weddings, anniversaries, or other corporate events. Teachers who have good eating and drinking habits can survive in this routine without affecting their health.

Matt Bianco:

How can teachers support the classroom activities? They have to learn how to avoid the lectures going in from one side and getting out from the second side. Teachers can make their lectures more entertaining. This is a common cause for teachers of some rough subjects such as mathematics and chemistry. They have to find interesting ways to make the classroom environment pleasant. Failing to do this may affect the learning process. The students will not take interest in the lecture if it is extremely rough. This is why most students don’t like to have educational degrees in mathematics and other similar subjects.

A good teacher explains all the steps of an academic topic and encourages the students to ask questions. He prepares the questions in mind. He expects that students may ask these questions so finding the answers becomes more important for him. Classic activity is another interesting way to make the lessons more attractive. In some cases, teachers assign topics to groups of students. This is an old technique but it comes up with new outcomes. A good teacher always provokes the students to ask questions. There is no need or reason to discourage this activity. Encourage the students to study the topics with friends after university time. Let them appear with certain questions. Decide a special hour for technical discussion. All these things come when both teachers and students are curious about the matter of learning.

This tool very advantageous for teachers because with the help of this tool they can assess the student’s work and give grades on the basis of their work. It is a necessary tool for students because they can check plagiarism in their work before submitting it to any official channel.

Turnitin Helps to Prevent Plagiarism:

Turnitin contains a huge amount of database in the form of websites, research work, books, etc. it is an internet-based American company that helps to find out similar work in your content. It is a subsidiary of Advance Publications and was founded in 1977. Many colleges and universities use this service in order to identify plagiarized work. In this way, students can improve their writing and also learn how to avoid plagiarism. In short, it is a necessary tool for both teachers and students.

Industry: Education

Type of Service: SaaS, online, editor, plagiarism checker

Used by: 30 M+ students worldwide – Almost 15,000 educational institutions

How Does Turnitin Work and Make Money

It is an online tool that identifies plagiarism in anyone’s content, work, and publication. The main purpose to design this tool is to promote academic uprightness. This work is submitted on different databases including:

  • Publication.
  • Website content.
  • Student papers to detect the copied content.

It also identifies contract cheating and many other copied materials. This effective tool is called Authorship Investigate. This is all done with the help of machine learning algorithms. In this, you can identify differences in someone’s writing style among someone’s work.

How Turnitin Works?

  • This useful tool allows students to recheck their content or work before submission.
  • Helps teachers or publishers to find the copied work.
  • Provide ease to students by helping them to identify revised areas before submitting their work on the web.
  • Allows teachers to check the plagiarism in someone’s work so that they can easily do the grading process.

For Students:

Now, it becomes very easy for students to check the potential plagiarism before submitting to any platform with the help of Turnitin. When they upload their work on this site, they automatically detect the copied work and also flag areas. They also say that they have a database of 165 million journal articles, 45 billion web pages, and 900 million student papers. In this way, they can check the plagiarized content by using their algorithms.

For Teachers:

When teachers receive work from their students, they also check it on Turnitin. Turnitin tells the amount of copied content in percentage also highlights the copied content and shows the areas of sources. This thing enables the teachers to assess the student’s work and they can easily perform the grading process. In short, it is a useful tool for both students and teachers.

How Turnitin Makes Money?

Turnitin offers its services to educational institutes with a yearly per-student fee. This fee depends on the size of the institution and the number of students. Due to this reason, there is no exact pricing policy available on the website of Turnitin. According to a survey, they charge 2 dollars per year per student. It means if the strength of the university is 15000 students then it means they have to pay 30000 dollars per year to Turnitin.

This type of simple and easy business model seems to be constructive and valuable for Turnitin. According to a report, they earn 127 million dollars annually with their services. So, we can say that Turnitin is a profitable company.

How Turnitin Compares to Rivals?

  • Size of Turnitin:

For the last 20 years, Turnitin effectively going strong. It contributed to the prevention of plagiarism. It means they are gathering content for their database for the last 20 years. The company claims that almost 30 million students use this tool in order to check the copied content. That’s why it is one of the leading anti-plagiarism software in the world. Unicheck is the only main competitor of Turnitin with more than 1 million customers. It is important for Turnitin to stabilize its position by providing new features and services to their customers.

  • Target User:

Turnitin only targets educational institutes whereas Unicheck and Copyleaks attract personal customers, educational institutions, and businesses. It is important for Turnitin to focus on other sectors in order to expand its reach.

  • Business Model:

Academic plagiarism and Copyleaks are the two biggest rivals of Turnitin and use the subscription model. They offer specific plans and subscriptions to their users so that they can choose according to their need and budget. But Turnitin’s business model is slightly different from others as their business model is based on the number of students served.

Future of Turnitin:

Turnitin focuses on future aspects as they acquired Advance Publication recently. This thing has diversified the company’s algorithm. They are also planning to expand their portfolio by adding different fields such as science and math. In this way, they can target the students of high schools and colleges so that they can submit their assignments and work.

Conclusion:

No doubt, Turnitin has gained exponential growth in the anti-plagiarism sector by targeting education institutions. Their business model is far better than its competitors. But they have the potential to diversify their portfolio by adding new features. In this way, they can improve their working and earn more profits.
