10 Things You Should Never Say At Work

10 Things You Should Never Say At Work

What you say matters a lot in any circumstance as it is the probable way of how your thoughts and feelings about anything are conveyed to others. Especially at work. In the famous words of Mark Twain, the difference between the right word and the almost right word is immense, similar to lightning and a lightning bug.

Eloquent speaking facilitates not only daily communication in an office setting and otherwise but also enhances your executive presence and overall persona. According to experts, every conversation that you engage in, especially in a work setting, is, in fact, a chance to create and nurture your impression upon others positively.

Experts stress that anything you say, whether at lunch or during a meeting, adds in some way to the assessment of your character by others. Mentioned below are 10 things that are though used by many of us very often; however, should be avoided as much as possible.

#1 “Am I/Does It Make Sense?”

This is a common statement that many people are heard saying very often. Making such a statement conveys a message that you yourself are not sure about what you are saying. Expert Tara Sophia Mohr suggests a better alternative that can be used in the form of asking, “What do you think or what are your thoughts?”

#2 “Just”

The word just is a common filler in our language at work, adding for no need at all. Sentences such as “I just wanted to” or “I Just thought that” are generally considered as being completely harmless; however, in a conversation, it detracts from the real purpose of what you are saying. According to Mohr, “just” are commonly inserted when we feel that something too strong may be coming from us. The use of just makes us sound defensive, and leaving them out of conversations depicts more authority.

#3 “You Should/Could Have” at Work

The use of this phrase may possibly indicate actions of fault or blame. Using more positively directed words such as “In future, I recommend/advise” is an excellennt idea to handle a situation.

#4 “This May Sound Wrong/Silly, But”

Using this phrase reduces the impact of what you are going to say, according to Darlene Price, a renowned book writer stating the results achieved from conversations and presentations. In her words, the phrase is discounting or reducing the force of your suggestion at work.

#5 “I Think” at Work

Using the words “I think” again sounds intimidating and less authoritative at work. When you are discussing an idea with a client or presenting it before your superiors, using words such as I believe/know/am confident adds more confidence and authority to what you are saying. It depicts that you are in control of the situation and are presenting facts rather than assumptions.

#6 “Why Me/ Not Fair”

Now let’s get one fact straight here. The world is full of injustices that take place everywhere, every day. This may happen to you, too, because it happens to everyone at some point in life. You may feel someone got a promotion and you deserved it too. Or you may think your idea was good than someone else’s; however, the other one got the chance. You will have to learn to cope with these situations at work and keep on working with the same motivation until you reach the goal you have set for yourself. Complaining may only destroy or delay your chances and will not help you in any way.

#7 “No Problem/Mention Not” at Work

In a work setting, whenever someone thanks you for anything, replying in a manner that conveys the message that you acknowledge that appreciation is the polite way to handle the situation. In return for someone’s “thanks,” a polite “welcome” may be the right answer. Use of no problem or mention not can situation negate proper conveying of the gesture. The use of ‘No problem’ may convey that in another situation, the matter could have been problematic. Similarly, the use of ‘mention not’ means doing the job was not anything important. It was something done on the way without much effort.

#8 “I Didn’t Have The Time”

This is another statement that should be avoided at all times at work. Saying that you did not have time for an office task is simply not true in the real sense as well. Either you didn’t manage the task or forgot about it. The best way to go about in such a situation is to suggest a new time and ensure that hqppens. Don’t give lame excuses to cover it up.

#9 “Not My Job/Responsibility/Problem”

Consider what you will feel if you ask someone to do something for you and get a similar reply. The same is the case with others; when bosses are concerned, this statement can spell real trouble for you at work. Even if a job exceeds the limits or boundaries of your job description, or if it seems inappropriate or inconvenient to you, it is important to a person who has asked you. Especially if you are working as a team, taking care of other members and contributing as a part of the team is necessary, or at least showing that it is your priority is a must. A detached, self-serving, inattentive, and unconcerned behavior usually very instantly acts as a barrier to career advancement.

#10 “But That is How It Always Happens.” at Work

Remember, innovation is key to progress; irrespective of the position, job, or career you are practicing, you will have to change your ways and practices of how you do your job. The effectiveness of all management today thrives on creativity and innovation in problem-solving situations, and making such a statement only proves you to be otherwise at work. Following the same practices again and again also indicates inefficiency, lack of flexibility, and a closed mind that shies away from any kind of change, which are all poisonous for career advancement. Embracing new ideas that come your way and handling them through using positive and welcoming statements such as “This is a new/different approach” or” Let us discuss the pluses and minuses” specify a more positive approach towards change along with depicting an open mind at work.
