Reading is a challenging activity. Reading is good for entertainment, pleasure, edification, and completion of a technical project. Sometimes, we do it for all these purposes. Some people have a habit of marking or writing on books while some prefer to keep the books neat and clean just like the brand new copies. The quality reader or good readers feel happy while establishing a library and showing it as a collection, but some quality readers visit the public libraries and read or borrow the books. Some people have a habit of finishing a book quickly and start reading another one, while some read slowly and try to go into the deep meanings. The trend of digital bookkeeping and reading is also common nowadays. Usually, people become lifetime readers when they have a strong intention of reading a book daily.

Some people catch this new routine and start reading books. Whatever the case you fit in, book reading is a quality habit that makes your lifestyle perfect and ideal. Those who have one of these cases should consider the quality features of a reader. These habits or characteristics are important. It is necessary to follow these routines in order to make yourself a quality reader. I discussed the features of a quality reader with some of my friends. The interesting points are as given below.


David Hicks | Quality Reader

He is famous for “Norms & Nobility” and is an award-winning personality (he received the Russell Kirk Paideia Award of 2002). According to David, habit is a simple word. There are varied factors to keep in mind when planning a day. People sleep, wake up, eat, pray, love the kids and spouses. David starts his typical day by reading a book. He always takes a cup of coffee early in the morning and goes to his father’s library. “My father has a wonderful taste of bookkeeping. He has a variety of books on several interesting topics. Visiting his library feels like spending quality time in learning,” David explained his book reading experience. David also reads the books in the afternoon and night. No doubt, David claims himself a slow reader, but he finishes several pages on a daily basis like a quality reader.


Andrew Kern | Quality Reader

Quality Writer and reader


He is the president of the CiRCE Institute. “A reader must pay attention while reading. He should always concentrate on the topic of discussion in order to have a better understanding. Attentiveness is the key to better understanding. This needs him to find answers while reading the topic. Some readers don’t pay attention to the context. They read the words and go through the pages without any purpose. This is not perfect reading. One has to ask several questions in mind before finishing the book. A quality reader always generates questions and finds the answers in the book. Whether it is a romantic story, political case, a fairytale, or a scientific paper, there are things to imagine before ending the topic. This is the only way a reader can concentrate on the words and phrases.”

He works as a director at the Center for Lit. He openly admits that he is not a good reader but he is still trying to improve his reading experience. “Good readers are not like me. They have something different that forces them to read an assignment and find the main queries. They don’t consider finishing a book within a few days, unlike me. I consider finishing a book when I turn the last page. This is not quality reading. A quality reader must establish a connection with the theory of an author. He must understand the basic theme of a book before closing it. There is a need to see the difference between finishing tasks and quality reading. Don’t consider finishing a book in haste.

It is good to find some goals or tasks with the help of a to-do list. Readers should make their to-do-list in order to start quality reading. Using this habit makes it impossible for the readers to start another book without gripping on the first one. It is necessary to go in the deep in order to find the basic purpose of writing a book.”


Good readers have a detailed view. They don’t consider the books an assignment. Quality readers never think of finishing a book without understanding the primary goals. They always enjoy reading while extracting useful information that improves their knowledge about certain topics and gives them the power to speak. They feel comfortable while reading because they don’t intend to finish reading and start a new reading project. Good quality readers seldom say that they have finished a book. They always say that they are in process. They prepare notes after reading. This helps them remember things. This is a secondary activity, but it is very effective to make the reading more useful. And most essentially, good readers always begin reading new books when they have extracted all the pleasure and fun from the previous books.


I wish I were like these readers. I prefer to read more books, but I would be in the style of a quality reader.


Brian Phillips:


He is a famous author and host of The Common Podcast. He has notable opinions on literature guidelines. One good routine of a quality reader is being ready to read a book by any author according to his own view. Quality readers set their parameters and standards before starting a book project. It is a feature of a quality reader that he always gives the author a chance to explain the opinions. Some readers always read a book from a technical point of view, and they always become strong critics of complicated matters. It is not a good habit. A reader should be open-minded, and he must allow the author to explain things with solid evidence. Quality readers never criticize a book or opinion just because they dislike the author. According to Solomon, (Proverb 18:13), those who create opinions and answers before hearing the references are shameful and foolish.


Angelina Stanford | Quality Reader


She coauthored the Close Reads Podcast. She also teaches literature and believes in solid opinions. “Some people wage wars against the books. They don’t like reading books and stop others too. On the other hand, some protect the books and guard the reading habits. They invite friends and colleagues to have a view of different books. They develop an interest in reading books and discuss the topics with other readers. This develops a community where everyone has solid opinions on any matter. Good readers don’t wage wars when they read the new books. They always surrender. It is good to lay down the swords even if we are under attack. It is our prime duty to defend the books with the help of critical points.

A quality reader never judges the books from the cover. He always takes time to have an opinion about the author and the book. It has been noticed that some readers don’t like certain authors. This is due to the lack of understanding. It becomes true, especially when there are true defenders of these books. It is necessary to see the book’s main theme, plot, context, and purpose. This helps us to have a general opinion about the poem, literature, and story. No book or poem will provide solid points if the readers decide to oppose the author. There must be a difference between an illiterate and literate person.”


Time McIntosh:


He is co-author of the Close Reads podcast and ex-Provost of the Gutenberg College. “Good readers are different from bad readers. A quality reader has certain habits making him elite. For example, bad readers always position themselves above a book. They may also keep them below a bad book. On the other hand, good readers do the opposite. They always try to criticize the bad books while appreciating the good ones.

He is editor of Forma and coauthor of the Close Reads podcast. “A quality reader always reads the books attentively. He becomes active while reading a book. This shows that he is taking interest in the book. It is necessary for the readers to develop a hypothesis about the book and its material after finishing the last page. However, they have to work in a systematic style while trying to develop questions and find the answers. This is the true nature of a quality reader. Most people read a book without checking the background of the author.

This might be good, but it is best to understand the author to find his true message fully. The good readers also focus on poetic imaginations. They always broaden their vision in order to find the secret or hidden messages in the text. Another style of getting the hidden messages is discussing the books with experts. Good readers always discuss controversial topics with some experts in order to have a better understanding. They never keep the confusions in mind.”
