The source of a river is a sea, an ocean, or a lake, and it ends at a specific point. Rivers play an essential role in human life and are also crucial for nature. This article will discuss the top 10 longest rivers in the world, longer than 2500 miles / 4000 kilometers. Keep reading to uncover the list.

1)   Nile River

Undoubtedly, the Nile is the world’s longest river, with a total length of 4160 miles / 6695 kilometers. If you look at the Nile River’s source, it is still disputed. Some people think that Lake Victoria is the source of the Nile. However, various feeder rivers of the Nile make it one of the longest rivers in the world. In Northeastern Africa, the importance of the Nile is enormous. Many great civilizations evolved under the Nile Basin. It flows through Cairo or Luxor. However, the Nile River flows through many countries (around 10), such as Burundi, Tanzania, Congo, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, and Egypt. The beginning of the Amazon River is the Montaro River, and its mouth location is Amapa State, Brazil. The Amazon River contains approximately 20 percent of the world’s freshwater. Moreover, the Amazon River and its rainforest are such a great reserve of biodiversity. According to research, more than 16000 species and 360 billion trees can be located in the Amazon basin.

 

3)   Yangtze River

With a total length of at least 3875 miles / 6236 kilometers, the Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world. It is the most picturesque river on Earth due to its breathtaking surroundings. Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and originates from Tibet. It flows through the Three Gorges and gives such a beautiful view. The mouth location of the Yangtze is Shanghai. “Chang Jiang” is the Chinese name of the Yangtze River, meaning “Long River.”

 

4)   Yellow River

Yellow River

The Yellow River is the (4th) fourth longest river in the world, with a length of 3590 miles / 5778 kilometers. The starting point of the Yellow River is in the Bayan Har Mountains, Qinghai, China. The yellowish appearance of the river makes it the Yellow River. “Huang He” is the Chinese name for the Yellow River. The river carries a massive quantity of slits, so this is the reason for its yellowish color. According to researchers, China’s entire history was built near this river, so its importance is considerable in Chinese civilization. However, the river has caused several devastating floods over the years. It flows through Lanzhou, which is a prominent city in China. The mouth location of the Yellow River is Dongying, Shandong.

 

5)   Parana River

Parana River

The Parana River is, without any doubt, the fifth longest river in the world. The river is 3030 miles / 4880 kilometers long. It is another South American river but smaller than the Amazon River. It flows through various countries like Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The role of the river in the continent is very crucial. It is both politically and economically beneficial for these countries. The Paranaiba River is the original source of the river, ending in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The river flows into the Atlantic.

 

6)   Congo River

Congo River

The Congo River is the sixth longest river on Earth, with a total length of 2718 miles / 4374 kilometers. The river flows through many countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, and Angola. 

The river’s source location is Lualaba River, Boyoma Fall, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its mouth point is between Kongo Central, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zaire Province, Angola. The river outflows into the Atlantic Ocean.

 

7)   Mekong River

Mekong River

With a total length of 2703 miles / 4350 kilometers, The Mekong River is the seventh longest river in the world right now. The river’s overall picture is breathtaking as it flows from various countries like Myanmar, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The Mekong River ends at the Mekong Delta. The river outflows into the South China Sea. Mount Guozongmucha, Qinghai, China, is the source of the Mekong River.

 

8)   Lena River

Lena River

The Lena River is 2668 miles / 4294 kilometers long. It is the (8th) eighth longest river in the world. It originates from the Baikal Mountains, Russia. The river only flows within Russia, so it is one of the longest rivers in Russia. The mouth location of the Lena River is Lena Delta, Yakutia, Russia. The Lena River finally outflows into the Laptev Sea. It is such a beautiful river due to its surroundings. You must visit this river if you are in Russia.

 

9)   Irtysh River

Irtysh River

The Irtysh River is the ninth longest river in the world, with a length of at least 2640 miles / 4248 kilometers. The river mainly flows through Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. 

The starting point of the Irtysh River is in the Altai Mountains, Bayan-Oelgii Province, Mongolia. The river ends at Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia. The interesting fact is that it outflows into the Ob River.

 

10) Niger River

Niger River

The Niger River is one of the longest rivers in the world. The overall length of the river is around 2597 miles / 4180 kilometers. The source location of the river is Guinea Highlands, Faranah Region, Guinea. 

The mouth location is Niger Delta, Bayelsa, Nigeria. The Niger River mainly passes through Guinea, Mali, Benin, Niger, and Nigeria. Moreover, it is one of the biggest landmarks in these countries. The river outflows into the Atlantic Ocean.
