The 6 Biggest Red Flags That You’re About to Break Up, According to Psychologists

Psychologists have revealed the 6 red flags that indicate your relationship is about to explode. And contrary to popular belief, cheating is not one of them.

Psychologists at the University of Liverpool have identified the red flags that are ruining relationships.

Traits like apathy, poor hygiene, and being too clingy are major red flags for breakups.

Find out why women have higher breakup standards and how these red flags affect relationships.

Have you been dumped but don’t understand why? Here’s a study that might interest you. While a breakup is always difficult (especially when you’re dumped and you don’t expect it), psychologists from the University of Liverpool have revealed the six main “red flags”, or warning signals, considered by men and women as reasons for breaking up.

This study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, involved 285 American students with an average age of 22. They each followed two types of assessments: the first on the importance of desirable traits in a partner and the other on their degree of openness in a relationship. In total, 22 traits presented as “bits of information that you learn about a person and that could make you lose interest in the potential partner” were proposed to the participants.

The Red Flag Warning Signs of A Romantic Breakup

In total, six traits were considered to be the warning signs of a romantic breakup. Each “red flag” nevertheless differed for long-term and short-term relationships as well as between men and women.

When it comes to long-term relationships, partner apathy—being inattentive and uninterested—was the top red flag for both men and women. Poor hygiene was second, followed by being too clingy or too jealous.

What Makes You Lose Interest in Your Partner:

Apathy, or otherwise a lack of interest and disregard for the other person’s interests, emerged as the top argument likely to end a long-term relationship, especially because inattention shows a lack of parenting skills in some participants.

Poor hygiene. This is one of the first points of agreement for breaking up. “People want partners who are fertile (i.e., smell-free, STI-free, attractive) and good parents (i.e., trustworthy, ambitious, caring, nurturing) for their offspring,” the researchers say.

Too clingy. In short-term relationships, being too clingy has been shown to be one of the biggest turn-offs, particularly because it negates a partner’s non-reproductive efforts, aka casual sex.

1- Addict

2- Unmotivated

3- Promiscuous, i.e., having had too many other partners.

4- I take advantage of it

5- Privacy policy

6- Regarding short-term relationships, the ranking was slightly different for women and men:

7- Poor hygiene

8- Too clingy

9- Apathetic

10- Unmotivated (for women) / Promiscuous (for men)

11- Promiscuous (for women) / Unmotivated (for men).

Women Have Higher Standards | Red Flags

Psychologists have found that women tend to have higher breakup criteria than men. “Because women have higher rates of compulsory investment in offspring, women have a habit to maintain higher standards,” the researchers said.
