Know The Personality
You can’t judge a book by its cover. This is a well-known adage, often used to remind us that the true value of a person or thing isn’t measured simply by its outward appearance. However, sometimes, that cover can tell us a lot more than we think. In fact, recent research shows that we are often able to make surprisingly accurate judgments about people’s personality traits and characteristics simply by looking at them.
Scientists have conducted various studies to explore how our leadership skills can reflect deeper aspects of our personality and behavior. These studies revealed that the way we smile, our choice of clothing, or even our walking style can convey significant information about us.
Here’s a look at some of the fascinating findings that have emerged from this research:
1- Extroverted People Smile More
Do you smile a lot? Then you might be an extrovert. According to research, extroverted people tend to smile more naturally. However, introverted people have to try to keep smiling in public situations.
Studies have demonstrated this phenomenon by looking at photographs of smiling people and determining, based on their smiles, which of them were likely extroverted.
2- Narcissists
They Prefer to Wear Brighter Clothing and Accessories
A study predicted a person’s level of narcissism simply based on how a person looked in a full-body photo.
Certain attributes led participants to these conclusions, including whether or not a person wore bright clothing, makeup, and accessories and whether or not they smiled a lot.
The researchers write, “These findings suggest that narcissists appear to alter their appearance (consciously or unconsciously) in ways that reflect their appearance-oriented motivations.”
3- Personality
By Your Choice of Shoes
A study published in the Journal of Research in Personality reveals that you can read someone’s personality through their choice of shoes. The study asked participants to fill out a questionnaire about their personality qualities and then take a photo of their shoes.
Later, they asked another group of people to look at these photos and describe the wearer’s personality. Surprisingly, most people were pretty accurate in their guesses!
The results revealed that people who wear comfortable shoes tend to have a pleasant personality, while those who wear ankle boots are more likely to be aggressive.
Wearing uncomfortable shoes can show that you’re a calm person. Those who wear well-maintained shoes are more likely to be clingy and anxious.
4- Your Walking Style
According to body language expert Patti Wood, the way you walk can say a lot about who you are. If you walk quickly and lean forward, you’re likely to be more logical and organized. Moreover, you are more serious and competitive.
If you walk with your shoulders back and your head high, you tend to be charismatic and socially adept. Additionally, if you walk lightly and stare at the ground, you may be more introverted and polite.
5- Eating Habits
Reveal Your Approach to Life
Do you eat your food quickly or slowly? It can tell a lot about your personality.
The Huffington Post surveyed experts on eating behaviors and here’s what they found:
Quick eaters are more likely to be ambitious and open to experimentation, while slow eaters prefer to be in control and enjoy life. Adventurous eaters are likely to step out of their comfort zone. However, picky eaters are more likely to be neurotic.
6- People Who Appear More Positive
In A Selfie May Be More Open To Experience
Looking happy in a selfie can reveal other traits about your personality. A study found that people could accurately predict a person’s openness to new adventures based on how positive they looked in a selfie photo.
Observers moderately to strongly agreed in their Big Five personality ratings based on selfies.
According to the study itself:
“We also examined the personality judgments of unacquainted people and found that observers moderately to strongly agreed in their Big Five personality ratings based on selfies. However, they could only accurately predict the openness of selfie owners.”
7- How Smart Your Personality
Yes, you can really tell how smart a man (but not a woman) is just by looking at him. A study conducted in the Czech Republic used static facial photographs to test the relationship between measured IQ, perceived intelligence, and facial shape.
Faces that appear highly intelligent are rather elongated and have specific features. However, there is no correlation between these morphological features and actual intelligence measured by an IQ test.
According to the study:
“Faces perceived as highly intelligent are rather elongated with a bigger gap between the eyes, a larger nose, a slight inclination of the corners of the lips, and a more pointed, less rounded, and more pronounced chin.
“In contrast, the perception of lower intelligence is associated with wider and more rounded faces, with eyes closer together, a shorter nose, lower corners of the lips, and a rounded and massive chin.”
“In contrast, we found no correlation between morphological features and actual intelligence measured by an IQ test, either in men or women.
8- You’re Aggressive or Not
A Canadian study found that most women can accurately predict how aggressive men are based on their appearance.
Men with a larger face width-to-height ratio and a strong jawline are more aggressive. A strong jawline is also associated with a strong personality.
9- Who’s a Leader and Who’s Not
People can often identify a person’s leadership skills simply based on their photographs.
A study found that people who appear confident and intelligent are often perceived as better leaders.
10- Level of Vulnerability | Personality
It has been found that criminals and psychopaths can tell how vulnerable someone is based on the way they walk. Normal people have a hard time guessing how vulnerable someone is, but criminals are better at it.
Because another study showed that criminals were able to tell how vulnerable someone is based on the way they walk!
11- More Agreeable People Have Bigger Eyes
A Chinese study found that more agreeable people had raised eyebrows and smaller foreheads. People with round eyes are expressive and more likely to be impulsive, while those with downward-sloping eyes can be more pessimistic.
The study also found that:
– People with round eyes tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves. They are expressive and more likely to be impulsive.
– Wide-set eyes indicate an adventurous personality willing to try new things.
– People with almond-shaped eyes tend to be passionate but grounded in reality. – Downward-slanted eyes can be a sign of a pessimist.
12- How Religious Are You?
Some studies show that people who dress neatly, smile a lot, and appear more energetic are often identified as more religious.
Participants were generally correct about whether or not a person was religious in real life.
13- Your Posture | Personality
A person’s posture says a lot about their attitude. Dr. Judith Orloff says that when it comes to posture, a head held high can indicate confidence. However, an uncertain or hunched posture can signal low self-esteem. If they walk in an uncertain manner or hunched over, it can be a sign of low self-esteem.
14- Your Physical Movements
People express their feelings through movements more than words. For example, we lean toward those we like and away from those we don’t like.
“If they’re leaning in, if their hands are outstretched and open, palms up, that’s a good sign that they’re connecting with you,” says Evy Poumpouras, a former Secret Service special agent.
If you notice the person leaning back, that means they’re putting up a wall. Another movement to notice is crossing their arms or legs. If you see someone doing this, it suggests defensiveness, anger, or self-protection.
Evy Poumpouras says, “if someone is leaning toward me and all of a sudden, I say something and their arms are crossed, now I know I said something that they didn’t like.”
On the other hand, hiding your hands means you’re hiding something. But if you see them biting their lips or picking at their cuticles, it means they’re trying to calm down under pressure or in a sticky situation.
So, the next time you find yourself “judging a book by its cover,” remember that it’s not a bad way to determine a person’s personality traits. We may not like being able to evaluate someone in such a short amount of time, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
