Crispy Chicken Wontons at Home
Chicken wontons recipe, like at the restaurant but at home;)
Ni-hao!
Today I’m offering you a classic little appetizer of Chinese restaurants that I love: Crispy chicken wontons recipe!
I offer you the chicken versions here, but you can substitute it with minced meat or even shrimp! For chicken, I advise you to choose preferably the thigh, which will have more taste and more fat!
If you love those perfectly crispy, golden-brown chicken wontons from your favorite restaurant, you’re in for a treat! Making them at home is easier than you think, and the best part? You get full control over the flavors, textures, and ingredients. Here’s how to make them just like (or even better than) your go-to takeout spot.
Crispy Chicken Wontons
Ingredients:
(Serves about 4-6)
For the Filling:
- ½ lb (225g) ground chicken (or finely minced chicken breast)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce (adds that rich umami flavor)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp white pepper (or black pepper)
- ½ tsp sugar (balances flavors)
- 1 green onion, finely chopped
- ½ cup finely chopped cabbage (optional, for extra texture)
For the Wrappers:
- 1 pack of square wonton wrappers (available at most grocery stores)
For Frying & Serving:
- Neutral oil (vegetable or peanut oil) for deep frying
- Sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, or homemade dipping sauce
Restaurant-Style Chicken Wontons
1- Make the Filling
In a bowl, mix the ground chicken, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, white pepper, sugar, green onion, and cabbage. Stir until well combined. The mixture should be sticky and well-seasoned. Let it rest for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
2- Assemble the Wontons
- Place a wonton wrapper flat on a hygienic surface.
- Place about 1 teaspoon of filling in the center—don’t overfill, or they won’t seal properly.
- Wet your finger in water and run it all along the edges of the wrapper.
- Fold the wrapper into a triangle, pressing the edges to seal tightly.
- For the classic restaurant-style fold, bring the two opposite corners of the triangle together and pinch them to form a small “purse” shape.
Pro Tip: Keep the assembled wontons covered with a damp towel to prevent them from drying out.
3- Fry Until Crispy
- Pour about 2 inches of frying oil in a deep pan and heat to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the wontons in several batches, make sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, flip occasionally, until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and drain on a paper towel.
4- Serve & Enjoy
Serve hot with sweet chili sauce, soy sauce with a splash of vinegar, or even a homemade garlic dipping sauce.
Bonus Tips for Perfect Wontons
Don’t overstuff: Too much filling can cause the wontons to burst during frying.
Seal properly: Press out any air bubbles to prevent them from opening in the oil.
Try steaming or boiling: For a healthier twist, steam or boil the wontons and serve with a light broth or dipping sauce.
Now you can enjoy crispy, restaurant-style chicken wontons anytime at home! Let me know if you try them.
